If you live in an area where you have an abundant supply of electrical power, then you are lucky. It is surprising how much of the world cannot just plug in a toaster when they want to toast some bread. Even in the U.S. there are parts of the country that are remote enough that the electrical grid hasn’t reached them yet.
For true wilderness aficionados, the sight of power lines and civilization would spoil the pristine views of nature. But 21st Century citizens aren’t likely to become less connected in the future and we all want our laptops, our TVs and our refrigerators. Electricity which was once a luxury and a novelty has become a necessity for modern man and woman.
Companies that have field teams that are located in the sparser areas of the country need power to run their computers and their business equipment. Where do they get the power to stay in business without utility power?
The answer to the need for power in remote locations is generators. Simply stated, a generator is a motor that creates electricity. It runs on an alternate fuel source which can be gasoline, natural or propane gas, diesel, solar, or wind. In most places, a permanent generator will run on natural gas which is supplied via underground pipes from a utility. The benefit of this source of fuel is that it is uninterruptible and not subject to weather conditions that might disrupt other sources. A home standby generator can also be used to supply power when the electricity goes out due to storms.
In oil fields and other rural work sites, diesel fuel is delivered and stored to supply industrial generators that create electricity for office trailers, tools and lighting. In fact, powering up temporary lighting is one of the activities that mobile generators are used for. Whether in a stadium, at a concert or other outdoor venue, you will usually see generators at the base of light towers since they are usually temporary installations.
Solar or wind-powered generators do not typically have enough horsepower to satisfy commercial power needs but can be useful for minimal residential needs in remote areas. And since they use naturally occurring sun and wind, they are the most eco-friendly of all generator types as their fuel source is renewable.
